Spike Productions and The Art Newspaper have launched a web TV channel to coincide with the 2008 Frieze Art Fair in London.
The new online channel for the art world features interviews with key collectors, curators, dealers, artists, and art world luminaries.
Spike Productions is one of the UK’s leading production companies and has teamed up with The Art Newspaper to provide breaking news, art market analysis and insight for the art world, online.
The move is part of Spike’s continued drive into the UK market and beyond. By partnering with one of the world’s foremost arts publications, Spike aims to create the number one resource for commentary on art market developments as well as an invaluable source of information on artists, galleries, curators and collectors.
For instance, the site features interviews and commentary on the recent Damien Hirst sale and the wider art market implications. Ivor Bracka assails The Art Newspaper’s coverage of the sale and there are further retorts and coverage from experts Roger Bevan and Louisa Buck. They examine the importance of the sale and analyse the implications of its success for the international art market.
Also on the channel are insightful interviews with sculptor Sir Anthony Caro, painter Ellsworth Kelly and singer Patti Smith – all recorded this year. There are also illuminating interviews with John Richardson, Jeffrey Deitch, Adam Lindemann and Simon de Pury, to name but a few.
Anna Somers Cocks, founder of The Art Newspaper and presenter for The Art Newspaper TV says, "We have always insisted on going to primary sources for our stories in the print edition and the WebTV channel will maintain these standards. Firsthand comment from experts in their respective fields will be the hallmark of our interviews".
Spike Production’s Managing Director Warren Mauger says, "This is such an exciting time for broadcasting as the traditional business models fly out of the window. Web TV is still relatively new but we felt it was important to get in early and build a strong presence. Our partnership with The Art Newspaper is the perfect set up as you have an international publication with a great reputation focusing on a niche market. We provide the web TV platform and production skill and they provide the expert knowledge and access to the art market’s key players".
In time the site will be built to the point where full-length programmes are commissioned in the same way traditional television channels source content.
Next month the Spike team head to America to film at Art Basel Miami Beach. The Art Newspaper TV’s audience will be treated to the latest news, views and features from the number one art fair in the USA.
