John Cleese and Durrell produce Agile Frog film

Tuesday 16 October 2007, 06:17am

Spike is currently working with Durrell on a film that will highlight the plight of the Agile Frog.

Mid-way through the project John Cleese has leant his support to the film and the Spike team are out and about filming in various island locations.

The film will feature John Cleese talking about the species and the situation surrounding it in Jersey. During a recent visit to the island John took time out from his schedule to work with Spike and Durrell’s communications manager Caron Glover.

The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is working hard to save the Agile Frog as it’s not found anywhere else in Britain other than the Island of Jersey.

It can be found in many European countries but its numbers are starting to show signs of decline.

In Jersey the last 100 years have been difficult for this little frog, which is now considered to be Critically Endangered. Its decline began at the turn of the last century and by the 1970s the agile frog could be found in roughly seven small areas of the island, dropping to just two by the 80s. Today, only one fragile population survives in the south-west of the island.

The Agile Frog is being given a wonderful boost, thanks to a new education initiative, and desperately needed funds, supported by HSBC Private Bank, Bedell Group and Motormall.

This new initiative is a great example of how Durrell and the Jersey business community can come together to make a real difference to Jersey’s rare wildlife.

Check back soon to see the completed film in the Durrell client area.
